Beat the Heat: Care for hair all summer long!

Care for your hair all summer long!

Summer is right around the corner! While everyone loves the sun and fun summer offers, it introduces new threats to hair health. Keeps your clients’ hair looking great by teaching them how to protect their locks from some of summer’s greatest offenders; sun, humidity and heat. Summer’s conditions are all harsh on hair causing it to be dry, brittle, dull, frizzy and hard to style. Here are a few tips to keeping hair healthy:

Sun: Just as it can damage skin, the sun can also damage hair. Suggest that your clients wear a scarf  over their hair to help protect it from the sun. If a client comes in for an up-do for an outdoor wedding or special event, propose pulling the hair into a classic chignon and wrap it with a scarf–this looks chic and keeps hair healthy. For a day in the sun, advise your clients to wear hats or keep their hair up, to prevent and minimize damage to the hair. Plus, wearing a hat will protect your skin–it’s a win-win!

Humidity: Everyone wants happy clients- that means letting them know when NOT to get a cut. If you want a happy client- and a returning client, encourage those with coarse or curly hair to wait for those bangs until after the threat of summer humidity is over. New York salon owner Mark Garrison, of Mark Garrison salon, warns, “The ‘boing’-or shrink up factor- is just too great!” Persuade your coarse and curly haired clients to keep their bangs longer during the summer- this will look sleeker and allow the client to sweep them to the side.

Heat:  Summer heat also brings sweat.  When you sweat, hair can become flat and greasy- not a good look for anyone! A quick fix is dry shampoo. Amy Abramite, the creative and educational director of Chicago’s Maxine Salon, suggests that, “If you’re on the go, refresh and cleanse your style with dry shampoo.” When clients come in for a cut or style, teach them how to use dry shampoo by spraying 1-inch sections, going against the grain of hair growth. Allow the shampoo to absorb and then brush out the hair.

Teach your clients these tips so that their hair stays beautiful and strong all summer long. Prevention is the most important step in keeping those luscious locks healthy, but if clients come in with damaged hair, recommend a highly moisturizing and conditioning mask- this will make the hair silkier and smoother.

Salon Apps: Make life easier

Are you looking for an easy and effective way to manage your salon? Consider putting technology to work for you. Invest in an ipad or utilize your iphone to get yourself organized. Technology isn’t just for computer geeks and the office.  Use what’s at your fingertips.

We are being bombarded with devices to make our lives easier: the iphone, Android, itouch and ipad and more. How can these devices make salon owners lives easier? There are various programs for technology that Salon owners or booth renters can utilize to organize their information.

Pencil You In, founded by Tiffani Ashley Bell is an online program that allows beauticians and other cosmetic professionals to book online appointments. It is a fast, easy and effective way to schedule customer appointments.

Bell thought of the idea for this program her senior year of college. She says: “Me and my stylist would go back and forth as far as phone tag. Because it was my senior year, it was really hectic that year. I couldn’t just say I’ll be back in exactly two weeks. So I’d say, ‘Ok I’ll call you and just make another appointment.’ But I would call and we’d play phone tag.”

She was going to school for programming and thought to create something for easier communication between beauticians and clients.

Pencil You In isn’t the only program out there. There are now various programs available to help salon owners.

Vagaro is a virtual “does it all” program customized for salon owners or booth renters.  According to the experts at Vagaro, “Salon owners can easily manage business when on the go. “Vagaro can help manage and organize customer information. Websites can be managed from the application. The app provides a calendar where users customize individual service prices and duration.  You can schedule daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly recurring appointments or easily change appointments. Salon owners can track customers and writing notes to keep track of the information. Vagaro keeps information safe while storing and backing it up on their servers.

NeoHair is another program that is easy to use, has an attractive design and is accessible online and regularly updated. Business can be viewed from anywhere in the world. Users can easily communicate with clients via Facebook and Twitter and send text messages and emails. It can be easily integrated into a website for online booking.

Other programs include Rosy Spa and Salon Software from the Floydware company. It is easy to set up and organize appointments. Mindbody is another option to organize online appointments. InterSalon is a professional program that can be integrated with Salon websites to book online appointments, salon events, nonworking days and employee vacations.

Whatever software you choose, choose something that works best for you or your salon. The tools are out there. Let technology work for you!

The 90 Second Movement Break for Salon and Spa Pros

Strength – Flexibility – Injury Prevention

Can a broken down body threaten your career?

Many salon professionals work long hours standing on hard floors making the same repetitive or sustained motions. This same repetitive motion  breaks down the muscles, joints and connective tissue causing weakness and pain in those muscle and joints. By incorporating a daily routine of 90 Seconds Movement Breaks your stress will be reduced, range of motion can be restored, flexibility of the muscle and soft tissue will be improved and muscle and joint pain will greatly reduce.

Frizzy to SEXY!

Curly hair can look so sexy and fun- the problem is that sometimes it can be hard to handle! Left to its own devices, curly hair can look frizzy and dried out. However, with a few simple tips, you can tame your curly hair and make it look perfect.  According to Patricia Morales, a top stylist for Redken, “Styling curly hair is really about two main things: reducing frizz and defining curl. Most people get frustrated because they try to tame curl or volume when the hair is dry which actually compounds the problem. It’s crucial to coat the hair with product when it is wet to block humidity and define curl pattern, and once it dries it shouldn’t be fussed with.”

WASHING: In order to combat the frizz, you must start at the basics: washing your hair. While some stylists recommend not using shampoo on dry, frizzy, curly hair- if you must wash, you should use a creamy shampoo–NOT a clarifying shampoo. Your curls require conditioner. It is impossible to over-condition frizzy hair. Every time you wash your hair, use a heavy conditioner and use a deep conditioning product once a week. As Morales mentioned, to eliminate frizz, you must protect your hair from the humidity. As soon as you get out of the shower, apply a combination of smoothing cream and an alcohol-free gel to the hair cuticle. Comb it through with a wide tooth comb.

ENHANCING: Enhance your curls by applying a curly hair styling to damp hair. Rub the cream into the hair and allow the hair to air dry. While it is not recommended to use a blow dryer on curly hair (as this may invite frizz), IF you do blow dry use a diffuser and hold the dryer under your hair while cupping or squeezing your hair in your palms.

LET IT BE: It is best to leave your curls alone- playing with them, blow drying, scrunching, etc. will increase the frizz factor. Your best bet is to let your hair air dry and style it by twisting curls around your finger.

SNIP IT: Get a haircut that suits your curls. Generally, length is better as it weighs down the curls. A medium to long cut leaves curls looking loose and sexy. However, when done properly curly hair can look great short, too. Find a stylist who has curly hair themselves or is very experienced in working with curly hair because they will understand your specific needs.

Curly hair might need a little extra love, but when you take care of it and give it what it needs- it will look amazing! Keep these tips in mind and you will fall in love with your curls!

Salon Retail Revenue

We all know that the key to a great salon is providing quality service and growing revenue, but remember this, “Just because you charge a customer the most for one product/service, does not make this your most profitable product/service.” (Small Business Solver) Many salons overlook the importance of retail-based revenue, where in fact, this is where the salon makes the most money, the fastest.

According to the below example, the salon’s most profitable stream of revenue is in the retail products. These products should relate and compliment the salons current offerings, for example: shampoos, conditioners, makeup, hair accessories, jewelry, etc.  Successful salon owners know it is important to train ALL of your employees and staff on the up sale of products. Every client that walks through the door should hear about at least one of your retail items and how they shouldn’t be able to live without it.

There are four things to identify when calculating your revenue/profit:

1. Revenue Stream
2. Profit per Sale
3. Time to Deliver Sale
4. Hourly Wage

Small Business Solver identifies how to calculate these items to budget your salon appropriately.

When stocking your salon with retail products, keep up with trends. Keep your inventory fresh and current. Current hair trends are loose, sexy, with a touch of wave. Keep products and tools on hand for your clients to achieve these results at home. Curling wands, flat irons, teasing brushes and smoothing products are essential this Spring.
